Background

Background

1. After imposition of emergency in 1973 Nationalist political activity almost came to halt until emergency was lifted and general elections were declared in 1977. For unknown reasons leaders of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh decided to contest elections to Parliament as candidates of Bharatiya Lok Dal (BLD). Ninety Eight candidates of BJS group were elected. It is not clear whether BJS had already officially merged with BLD or lost its identity on merging with Janata Party at later date.

2. After Janata Party government was formed at the centre erstwhile leaders of BJS moved an application to Election Commission of India to freeze the name and election symbol of BJS, which was agreed to. We feel it was illegal as application was not moved at the time of merger but at a much later date after BLD had merged with Janata Party.

3. Prof. Balraj Madhok, who was sidelined in BJS after unfortunate murder of Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay in Feb. 1968, had joined BLD after being expelled from BJS in 1973. He was its Vice President in 1975. He too moved to Janata Party alongwith BLD. Prof. Madhok an extreme nationalist and staunch supporter of Hindutva was quite unhappy and uneasy at his heart with policies being followed by Janata Party government. Formation of Minority Commission instead of Human Rights Commission and granting of Minority Status to Aligarh Muslim University which was revoked by Mrs. Indira Gandhi, proved to be proverbial last straw on camel's back. Prof. Balraj Madhok resigned from Janata Party and registered Akhil Bhartiya Jan Sangh (ABJS) in 1978.

4. Prof. Madhok was a senior leader of Arya Samaj and RSS (Pradesh Pracharak for Jammu & Kashmir) when he decided to enter politics. May be because of his soft corner for former colleagues and due to repeated back stabbing by persons he trusted, he could not develop ABJS into an Active Political Party. He contested election to Lok Sabha three times but not even once as a candidate of ABJS. Probably that explains why ABJS could not become an effective political platform.

5. Many competent and sincere nationalist workers joined ABJS but could not last long due to conspiracy of back stabbers.. With criminalisation of Politics and rampant corruption in all fields, the activist with commitment towards original ideology of BJS decided to form a new party which was to be reincarnation of BJS with refinements to suit current Political, social and economic environment. Election Commission registered new political organisation as Jan Sangh Party.
